Well I figured I would post my “Alternative Assignment” to watching “Crash”. I decided to lay all my cards on the table and be a witness for Christ, as well as explain what motivates me.

I was recently asked the question of what motivated me to not watch certain movies, or not listen to certain kinds of music. This question can be answered by taking a broader look at what motivates my decisions and ultimately my life. Believing that God created me, and that the Bible is inspired by Him, I can use His law as a guide, dictating both my thoughts and morals. My opinion is that the atmosphere I spend time in will have a direct effect on my life in one way or another. I believe that my life was paid for, that I live for reasons higher than my own, and that this life is a mere twinkling of an eye compared to eternity, which in turn dominates my thoughts and actions.

First, the Bible must be established in my heart as the inspired Word of God. I take literally, “All scripture is inspired by God, and is profitable for teaching, reproof, correction, and training in righteousness.” (II Ti 3.6) A two-page paper cannot begin to even touch on the historical accuracy to the canon of scripture or the hundreds of foretold prophecies. There are countless stories of men who took an unbiased approach of disproving God and the Bible, and in turn actually proved His existence and the accuracy of scripture. Hal Lindsey responding to a skeptic writes:

Philosophers, thinkers, scientists and doctors from every generation, on every continent, for 2000 years have tried to conclusively disprove the Bible – archeologically, historically, medically, scientifically – the one who found a single provably incorrect statement in any of these fields would prove the Book was written by a man.

Such a one would utterly destroy the underpinnings of the Judeo Christian ethic and would be the most famous philosopher who ever lived. The man who proved the Bible wrong! Surely history records such a genius – it’s not like the Bible and its precepts haven’t been under constant attack throughout history. But, sadly, there is no record of our historical genius.

Second, now that I realize that I have a hand written book that was inspired by God, I can use it, and the leading of the Holy Spirit as a guide for my life. The law is established in scripture, and although Christ’s death on the cross fulfilled the law and freed me from the consequences, I still use it as a moral tutor. I will examine one scripture as an example of why I do not use the Lord’s name in vain. I honestly cringe every time I hear people say “Jesus Christ” vainly. I try every time to actually pray for their misuse of His name, because there is a punishment. “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain.” (Ex 20.7) This is a strict command and forewarning of a punishment that is associated with saying His name vainly. I honestly don’t understand why “God” or “Jesus Christ” is put into curses. Why those names? You never hear anyone say “Oh Muhammad” or “Buddha”. This is just one example of why I do not practice, or participate in functions that practice using my God’s name in vain.

Third, I am a firm believer that by entertaining things that I do not believe in will have a direct effect on my life, showing outwardly in one way or another. One scripture that addresses such things is “Do not be deceived: Bad company corrupts good morals.” I actually have first hand experience in this topic, because I used to have a very foul mouth. I thank God that after I sought His way, He immediately cleansed this outward sin from my life. I feel that I cursed so much because I was literally immersed in that kind of atmosphere. I heard this language while I was at school, at home, and from my girlfriends, and it didn’t seem wrong to me. After I had a true conversion, I did not even have to read, “Let no unwholesome word proceed from you mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification…” (Ep 4.29) to know that cursing is profitable for nothing.

Fourth, I do not live merely for myself but for the one who bought me, “For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.” (1 Co 6.20) When Jesus Christ came into the world as a human, born of a virgin, lived a sin-free life, and was sacrificed as an acceptable offering to God for sin, thus fulfilling the whole law, He bought my life. We now have an agreement that I accept him as God, and realize that He created me, so in turn I live my life for Him by doing His will. He in turn gives me His Spirit while on earth, “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, that you are not your own?” (1 Co 6.19) This helps convict me and lead me in God’s way. Another reason I live for God is because He promises me the gift of eternal life with Him in heaven when I die. So my decisions to not do certain things are dictated by living for God, and doing the best of my ability to do the things that He would want me to do.

In conclusion, and the reason why I do or do not do certain things can be summed up in a few words. I am not living with a motivation of this earthly life, but I am motivated by a spiritual life and seek rewards for being a good steward of this temporal life on earth. I run after and seek, “to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you.” (1 Pe 1.4) I am not perfect and fail in matters every day. Fortunately, I have a God who forgives me if I come to him with a repentant heart, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 Jn 1.9) I take God at his word; realizing that my flexibility with my surroundings are likely to be reproduced in ways which I may not like, understand that I was bought for a very high price, and that I live this life with a promise of heaven. These are the things that motivate my thoughts and actions.

I am finally getting a chance to go back to school, and had my first experience with the crap that a lot of public colleges subject students to in the name of critical thinking. Our class was given an assignment to watch the movie “Crash” and post a few questions regarding opinions of the movie in one way or another. I thought this would be a fun project considering I would get to sit around and watch a movie, and it would count as points toward the grade in this class. Oh, was I in for a big surprise. I didn’t get 15 minutes into the movie before I was convicted to not watch it, and to take a stand for my faith. I couldn’t believe the language; F-this and that, and terrible in-depth curses, in addition to the intolerable vain use of my Lord’s name. The combination of all this made my decision to not watch anymore, an easy one. I told my teacher I was unwilling to watch the movie, and asked if I could read an outline of the movie to answer any discussion questions for it. This is the email I sent him:

Professor,

I would like to inform you that unfortunately I am unwilling to watch “Crash”. I am a Christian and I am deeply offended when my Lord’s name is taken in vain. I watched the first ten minutes and cringed at the obsessive “F”-this, and the overall foul language. I have a 2-year old son and I don’t feel that I can be a good model to him by watching and digesting that kind of language and vain use of my Lord’s name. I can read a general overview of the movie and answer any discussion question from that if you would like.

Unfortunately, I would not be reading an outline and answering any discussion postings on “Crash”. His reply:

Hello,

I understand your position, even though I think that in a college class that fosters critical thinking and explores a variety of cultural contexts, sometimes a little bit of flexibility is necessary. The movie was selected was particalur learning outcomes in mind and ties right into the readings from our book. Nevertheless, instead of watching the movie, I would like you to write a two-page essay explaining your position and what motivated you not watch certain movies, or listen to certain kinds of music, etc. Writing a two-page essay should take as long as watching the movie and posting a couple of replies. Please let me know if this is acceptable.

I really like this “sometimes a little bit of flexibility is necessary”. Just like the world to think that. We have a few good Christian t-shirts that address things like this, specifically one called Brain Washed Christian T-Shirt. Illustrates this overall situation just perfectly. Compromise here; compromise there, little flexibility here and there, all in the name of exploration and understanding. Don’t think so. Keith Green wrote an awesome book called “NO COMPROMISE” and that is how I feel about that.

If you are a voter you are probably thinking at least once a week about who you are going to vote for in 2008. It’s anybody’s race at this point in time. Obama, Romney, Giuliani, Clinton (God forbid), Thompson, Huckabee, etc… Well, let’s narrow it down a little. I’m a republican and there are only two names on the above list that I would like to see win the Presidency at this point in time. (Keep in mind, I reserve the right to change my mind at any point in time between now and the elections!!) Those two are Huckabee and Romney.
I am a die-hard Values Voter. I want somebody in the Presidency who cares about life, family, and morals. These used to be basic obviously kind of things, but not anymore. So, in order to keep these things sacred in this country we need a President who will veto stupid bills that erode these basic facets of life set up by God. The only two 2008 Presidential Candidates that I can see doing that is Huckabee and Romney which I mentioned above.
Huckabee is a born again Christian and my first choice. He has the same values, morals, and agendas that I have, so therefore he is definently number one in my book at this point in time.
Romney runs a close second. Granted, Romney is not a born again Christian, he is Mormon. Now, I don’t endorse the Mormons at all as a religion and there are many things I do not agree with at all. But when it comes to politics, even though we differ in doctrine, we have a lot of the same morals. Romney is for the basic things I mentioned above that are important Value Voters issues. He’s not wishy-washy changing with whatever wind of public opinion blows next. He stands up strong for what he believes in. When Massachusetts Governer, there was a law the MA senate was trying to pass to legalize embryonic stem cell research in the state. Romney told them he would veto the bill because he could not stand by stem cell research morally. They pretty much laughed at him because it would be ridiculously easy to overturn his veto when it went back to the Senate. Everybody knew that if he vetoed the bill it would not matter because the Senate would pass it anyways. Public opinion believed he should just sign the bill, because his veto didn’t matter. But, Romney vetoed it. He could not have his signature next to that kind of bill. I was, to say the least, impressed. How many political leaders can you think of that will do that?
Anyways, I really want to know who everybody out there is pulling for to win the 2008 election and why. Please, no bashing, just debate.

I already know that the view I am about to share is largely unpopular. Many people want to be “politically correct” about this instead of looking at the cold hard truth. Basically it comes down to this: the Islamic people are a HUGE threat to the U.S. and our people. Let me stress something right away. I am not anywhere near racist. I love people of all races, however I do have a problem with the Islamic RELIGION. Let me explain my reasoning.
Islam teaches it’s members to kill other people that aren’t Islam or won’t turn to Islam! Now does that sound threatening or what!? Sounds like you wouldn’t want to be on their bad side. Problem is, if you are American you are automatically on their bad side! Not to mention the fact that one of the leading Islamic nations, Iran, has nukes! Now, I don’t know about you, but knowing these things makes me a “little” nervous.
Looking at the above facts I am in shock when I hear people say things like: “We don’t need to use military action, peace talks will do the trick!” Are they serious?? I am sure the Islamic leaders laugh at our stupidity everyday as they plan to nuke us into oblivion! Osama Bin Ladin said it perfectly in his recent video when he said that America should turn to Islam and then they will see peace.
Islam is a bloody religion. Men, women, and children are ready and willing to die or give up their children to death as martyrs! This is the greatest honor! How do you fight people like this? It takes strong people to fight back. People who are willing to look the threat straight in the eye and say: “I will not give in, I will not back down, and I will fight for what is right!”
I am a Christian and sometimes I find it extremely ironic that many left-wingers consider my religion more of a threat than the above mentioned Islam. The reason is because darkness can have no part with light. Darkness runs from it! The Christian religion that teaches love, peace, and righteousness threatens those that live with sin deep in their heart. They would rather deal with a religion that teaches hate, war, and sin. This is very sad, but true. Satan always strives to do the exact opposite as our Lord does. The differences between Christianity and Islam are exact opposites. I think Islam is straight from Satan. This is a strong statement, but it is the truth. Anything that is not of or from Jesus Christ is of Satan!!
So, I encourage everybody to realize the truth of this great threat against our nation, pray, and call your representatives and senators to tell them you support the fight against terrorism and Islam! If we deal with this threat we might actually have a chance in this great battle of our time. If we continue to push off this threat and refuse to recognize it, then we may be looking at a terrible tragedy to our nation in the near future.

I read a news story today from Yahoo! News about the release of 12 South Koreans freed in Afghanistan. The Taliban kidnapped 23 South Koreans on July 19 while they were on a bus from Kabul to Kandahar. Two of these hostages have already been executed. We hear about these types of kidnapping by the Taliban all the time. It’s their way of installing fear in foreigners and bribing governments.
However, there is a difference with this kidnapping. Usually the government whose people have been kidnapped try to get their people freed by threatening the Taliban. They give out consequences if the hostages are not released. If that doesn’t work, then you usually do not hear about a release. Sad, but true.
South Korea is a different story. Instead of playing hard with the Taliban, they are appeasing them. South Korea has agreed to not let any more Christian missionaries go to Afghanistan and they will also pull their troops out of Afghanistan all for the release of 21 of these hostages, 12 of whom were released today with the rest to follow soon.
South Korea is only sending a message to the Taliban that kidnapping works! They can get what they want if they kidnap innocent people. Instead of sending them a message that kidnapping will not be tolerated, they’re backing down with their tail between their legs. Don’t think of me as heartless concerning these poor hostages. I’m not. However, people who willingly choose to work and do ministry in these types of countries, especially Iraq and Afghanistan, know the risks. Kidnappings happen ALL the time in these countries. It’s terrible, but widely known. They took the risk and my prayers are with them.
I just do not like to see a country appease terrorism. By doing this, more innocent people will be hurt and kidnapped because the Taliban will think this method works. I wish countries would all get on the boat of stopping terrorism! It’s an awful battle right now, but a necessary one and not one to be ignored! Remember that Hitler was appeased over and over again by wimpy governments and look what came of that!

I sit here today and think about a very important issue the church is facing. I believe that today’s church is suffering from severe apathy and complacency. On-Fire Christians are becoming harder and harder to come by. Why? I submit as an answer to this question that Christians are way too comfortable. There is no fire, so why should Christians be on-fire?
In the forefront of my mind is China. The things I read about this country give me instant chills. The government controls everything they do. It’s the government’s way or the highway, and they’re very serious about keeping superiority in place. If you are against the government than you are a criminal; you can find yourself persecuted, imprisoned, and tortured while the government rips your family and life apart.
Unfortunately, (or is it fortunately?) practicing Christianity is against the government. Christians live in fear of their government everyday. So, do they leave China? Cower and deny Christ? No! And that is what I find simply amazing! China’s Christian population is flourishing at an amazing pace! Christianity is the fastest growing religion in the 1.3 billion-people country! Doesn’t that fact surprise and amaze you? Christians in that country have to practice their faith underground, and in the face of possible imprisonment and torture, yet they flourish.
A speaker for Voice of the Martyrs came to my college a couple of years ago. I will never forget some of the things I heard him say or saw on a video he brought with him. Some people had disgusied themselves as from the government and had video cameras. They persuaded some local Chinese police to allow them to accompany them while they “interrogated” some Christians. The police officers were eager to show off their skills and allowed the video camera men to accompany them. What was caught on tape is something I will never forget. One scene had an officer slowly breaking the ankle of a Christian woman while she was gagged with a rag full of oil. Her screams were went unheeded as they punished her for being a Christian. Other scenes on this video I will not mention. They are all sad and horrific. Yet, these Christians are to be admired. They keep their faith in the face of such things, they grow, and they’re on-fire for Christ!
Maybe persecution like the above mentioned is what the church needs to become alive again. History tells us that the church flourished the most when it was being persecuted. I believe one of the biggest strategies the Devil uses is apathy and being too comfortable. Things are heading towards more wide spread persecution around the world and in America. The signs all point towards this. It is scary, but at the same time reassuring. Maybe the church needs a wake up call. Maybe this will be the answer. It looks like persecution may very well be the key to on-fire Christianity.

I grow more and more alarmed at what I see all the time in the media and in everyday life. Things are not looking up for Christians in today’s world. I have been doing some reading on WWII and the holocaust. It freaks me out to read about the beginnings and seeds of WWII, Hitler, and the genocide of the Jews. It all started with hate. Hatred of the Jews simmered and simmered. The pot was stirred and the flames fed as Germany started to put action to the propaganda of hate. Eventually that hate spread until the fire consumed many of the Jewish people, much of Europe, and eventually affected the entire world. Shockingly, much of the world sat by and turned the other way not willing to face a terrible evil and deal with it before it was too late. What could have been stopped was not stopped.

To be frank, I do not see much difference between that time and our own. I feel that we might be in the seeds and beginnings of yet another holocaust. This time those of us who love Jesus Christ are in danger. Hatred for Christians is spreading at an alarming pace throughout the United States, Europe, and the rest of the world. Christians have been dealing with persecution and martyrdom all over the world, but so far we Christians in America have been pretty much safe from the worst. I don’t know how much longer that will last. Hatred is simmering and the fire is being fed. We are coming under attack more and more. Christians are being arrested for handing out pamphlets, shut up from speaking their heart at events like graduations, and are losing their jobs for holding to their beliefs. Our freedoms are in danger everyday as the liberal politicians in Washington are trying to silence us even further.

I write all of this not to scare people, just to inform. I just want us all to be ready for a little heat. Maybe, if we refuse to learn from the past, a lot of heat. Are we all ready to face that here? If our world of safety and freedom is shaken will we still stand firm? Let’s not be caught unaware if the flame seeks to devour us very soon. Jesus told us to remember that if the world hates us that it hated Him first! Let’s not be surprised, just ready.

I just heard a very interesting statement that said the church in America is actually creating many atheists rather than Christians. What an interesting irony. Why would the Christian church be turning out atheists? The church has become very complacent recently. Not many Christians have an answer for the hard questions that circulate among the congregation and especially among the youth. The Bible tells us that we must be ready to answer for the hope that is within us. Sadly, many Christians cannot even adequately explain the salvation process, forget the hard theology questions! People who are searching for answers and come to the church are often disappointed in what they find. Also, an alarming number of children raised in the church are becoming atheists, because they are not getting answers! The church is satisfied with entertaining them rather than teaching them. Don’t get me wrong, it’s good to have entertainment for the youth, but that is usually ALL you will find. If the church is to start creating on fire believers rather than atheists, they need to get serious about answering serious questions! I find it a hard pill to swallow when a Christian cannot defend their faith. There is no point in believing in something you cannot passionately defend to the best of your ability. If you find that you do not know an answer, or hear a question you never thought about before, then study till you find the answer! The Bible is filled with mysteries that God is just waiting to reveal when we passionately seek the answers. God says “Seek and you will find, Knock and the door will be opened unto you!” Fellow Christians, do not come to this point. Study your Bible, know the answers, read books. Be ready to give an account and answers to even those hard questions! Let us not turn our back on the youth and push aside real questions that need real answers. I have gotten many questions asked of me recently. Let me give an example of a few hard questions that you might want to research.

1.) How does Genesis and the beginning of time fit in with current day Science?

2.) Explain the authors of the Bible and how it is the inerrant Word of God and not some man made book.

3.) How does evil and hell fit in with an all loving God and why do bad things happen to good people?

4.) Why was there the need for blood to be shed in order for us to be forgiven?

Friends and fellow Christians, I strongly encourage you that if you do not know the answers to the above questions, please do your research! Many of those questions are foundations to our faith. I have been asked those very questions countless times! How can we expect people to come to a saving knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ if we cannot answer those important fundamental questions? Do your research; trust me it will pay off!

Do you mean who is my employer? Well maybe but not really. Depends on who your ultimate employer is. Some jobs can really be a burden, and a real drain. Anyone who is reading this right now can probably sympathize with that statement. Some people haul trash, clean-up raw sewage, and the list goes on. How can you have the right mentality and make it each day regardless of the job? That depends on whether your ultimate employer is God or Man. If you have the mentality that your working for your boss or yourself I personally don’t think that you can really get the most out of the work that is here for you on this earth. On the other hand if you do you work for your heavenly Father no matter what you do its purposes are above comprehension.

A couple of scriptures to verify my point come from the book of Colossians. Col 3:17 “And whatever you do in word of deed, do all in the name of Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.” Jesus the mediator is another example in this verse, but I must stay on course. Again almost repeated in the same chapter Paul writes Col 3:23 “Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men.”. I don’t think I could illustrate that any clearer than straight from the word of God.

Sometimes work can really be a chore and we are not really sure why the Lord has us in this position or in this job. I can sympathize very much right now with this entry, but I know what I must do. First, pray that you would follow His will and not yours (who can know the mind of God?). Second, realize that if you have been praying and nothing has opened up that the Lord may have something for you that you haven’t learned yet. And finally, no matter how much you hate your job or your dislike your boss. Remember who you work for!!!
