Is South Korea appeasing terrorism?
By Thea | August 29, 2007
I read a news story today from Yahoo! News about the release of 12 South Koreans freed in Afghanistan. The Taliban kidnapped 23 South Koreans on July 19 while they were on a bus from Kabul to Kandahar. Two of these hostages have already been executed. We hear about these types of kidnapping by the Taliban all the time. It’s their way of installing fear in foreigners and bribing governments.
However, there is a difference with this kidnapping. Usually the government whose people have been kidnapped try to get their people freed by threatening the Taliban. They give out consequences if the hostages are not released. If that doesn’t work, then you usually do not hear about a release. Sad, but true.
South Korea is a different story. Instead of playing hard with the Taliban, they are appeasing them. South Korea has agreed to not let any more Christian missionaries go to Afghanistan and they will also pull their troops out of Afghanistan all for the release of 21 of these hostages, 12 of whom were released today with the rest to follow soon.
South Korea is only sending a message to the Taliban that kidnapping works! They can get what they want if they kidnap innocent people. Instead of sending them a message that kidnapping will not be tolerated, they’re backing down with their tail between their legs. Don’t think of me as heartless concerning these poor hostages. I’m not. However, people who willingly choose to work and do ministry in these types of countries, especially Iraq and Afghanistan, know the risks. Kidnappings happen ALL the time in these countries. It’s terrible, but widely known. They took the risk and my prayers are with them.
I just do not like to see a country appease terrorism. By doing this, more innocent people will be hurt and kidnapped because the Taliban will think this method works. I wish countries would all get on the boat of stopping terrorism! It’s an awful battle right now, but a necessary one and not one to be ignored! Remember that Hitler was appeased over and over again by wimpy governments and look what came of that!
